DESCRIPTION: Yorktown (now York, York County Pennsylvania) 30 hour grandfather or tall case clock, circa 1785-1793. Walnut case with brass dial and applied pewter spandrels. The case with bracket feet and carved spurs supporting a rectangular base with applied molding. The waist with arch shaped top. The bonnet with tombstone side windows, carved columns, triple late Georgian urns and an unusual inverted shelf-shaped applied lozenge beneath the central plinth. The dial with the name Peter Schwartz and the location it was made Yorktown are engraved on pewter plaque. Schwartz is a clockmaker and silversmith working in York between 1772 and 1793. Examples of his work are in numerous museum collections Behind the dial is a 30 hour movement. MEASUREMENTS: 99" high x 18" wide at base x 10" deep at base. CONDITION: Running. early 18th century, brass and silvered dial signed "Peter King/St. Giles's/Fecit, London", seconds sweep and date aperture, mask decorated spandrels, sarcophagus hood with barley twist colonettes and brass finials, Japanned waisted case of tall narrow form, door centering a glass bullseye, with pendulum, two weights, and winder, 90-1/2 x 21-1/2 x 10-1/2 in.
