A 19th century Merriman, Birge & Co., Ives Patent shelf clock. 30-hour weight driven wooden time and strike movement with painted wooden dial with Roman numerals. Mahogany case with a scrolled crest and Brass finials over a door with clear dial glass, mirrored center and reverse painted lower flanked by flat reeded pilasters with carved capitols, on a flat base. Old copy of paper label 80% intact. Older refinishing with minor wear, crest a well-done replacement, minor dial wear, restored lower glass, running when cataloged. 37 1/4" high. ESTIMATE $400-600

A mid 19th century Birge, Peck & Co. double decker shelf clock. 8-day time, strike and alarm strap brass movement with a painted metal dial. Mahogany case with molded cornice, upper dial door with lower reverse painted panel, flanked by turned pilasters above a lower door with stenciled glass, on a flat base. Older refinishing with minor damage, lacks feet, cracked center tablet, running momentarily when cataloged. 32 1/2" high. ESTIMATE $200-300

Birge & Fuller Triple Decker Shelf Clock. Original wood dial has a 7 in. black painted chapter ring with Roman hour numerals, floral painted spandrels and black painted hands; has an 8 day, weight driven brass strap plate movement, hour count wheel strike mechanism on a coiled gong, 2 iron side weights with original wood pulleys and brass covered pendulum bob on a long drop, movement signed ÂBirge & Fuller, Bristol, CT, USAÂ. In an Empire mahogany case with overhanging cornice top, long turned half columns over serpentine corbels, 2 glass panels in the upper door with reverse painted lower glass and lower door with reverse painted glass. C. 1840. Hands are repainted, minute hand repaired, glasses appear original, minor hairlines inside of the arbor holes on the dial, minor repair to the ratchet spring on the Âtime main gear, no inpainting to the dial and case is in original finish. 34 in. high x 21 in. wide x 6.5 in. deep.

The pasted label advertises the maker: John Birge (1785- 1862), and according to our sources worked alone in Bristol, Connecticut after 1840, which is when this traditionally appointed shelf clock was made. He also had strong associations with Joesph Ives, and owned some of Ives’ patents. An outstanding carved crest shows two inwardly facing cornucopia while unusual architectural representations of buildings are seen in the reserves of the reverse painted tablets.
