The pasted label advertises the maker: John Birge (1785- 1862), and according to our sources worked alone in Bristol, Connecticut after 1840, which is when this traditionally appointed shelf clock was made. He also had strong associations with Joesph Ives, and owned some of Ives’ patents. An outstanding carved crest shows two inwardly facing cornucopia while unusual architectural representations of buildings are seen in the reserves of the reverse painted tablets.

A triple deck shelf clock with two original “feather” style reverse painted tablets attributed to John Fenn. A weight driven clock with gilded and faux painted half columns flanking the triple glazed front and standing on turned feet. The eight day strap brass movement by Birge and Peck. [finials added at later date.]

Birge & Fuller Detached Fusee OG Mantle Clock. 5.5 in. painted metal dial with black Roman hour numerals and blue painted filigree at the corners; brass 8 day detached double fusee movement has an hour strike on a coiled gong and long drop brass covered pendulum bob, movement signed Birge & Fuller, Bristol, Conn. U.S.A. In a mahogany OG style case with reverse painted tablet in the door, original paper label in the back for John Birge, Bristol, Conn. Case has an original finish w/ minor veneer losses, some light wear to the reverse painting, minute hand is repaired, strike mechanism does not work; time mechanism is running properly. 23.25 in. high x 14 in. wide x 4 in. deep.
