Curtis & Dunning Bow Front Banjo Clock: In a mahogany bow front case with a TO movement; an unmarked metal dial; an eagle finial and the pendulum. Circa 1820-1830.
Not tested.
(The dial is stained. The movement is not marked; the dial is not signed; the case is dovetailed with small screws added at a later date; the inside of the bow front door has an initial and number and a date of 1904 written in pencil; we think a previous owners inventory number. The bottom finial is gone. The weight and the finial are both new.)

A gilt wood and eglomise painted glass banjo timepiece signed Curtis and Dunning, Burlington, [VT] [Vermont]. “Presentation banjos with Naval battles from the War of 1812 done in reverse painting were made between about 1812 and 1840 to commemorate Naval victories of our young nation against against their British counterparts- not very different from events Americans would commemorate today, such as the landing on the moon, the victory achieved during WWII, etc. The partnership between Lemuel Curtis, one of the best known of the New England clockmakers who was related to the Simon Willards by marriage of his brother, and Joseph Dunning was active in Burlington between 1821 and 1827, when this clock was made.

A 19th century American Lyre front banjo clock. Attributed to John Sawin, Boston. 8 day weight driven time only movement with a painted Iron dial and Roman numerals, faintly marked "Boston". Carved Mahogany two door case with gilded top finial over a circular dial door and foliate carved lower door with original Eglomise panel, shaped drop and lower Acorn finial. Refinished case with minor wear, dial wear, running when cataloged. 38" high overall. ESTIMATE $2,000-4,000
