Description

Federal Mahogany Tall Clock by Aaron Willard, Boston, Massachusetts, c. 1790, with 12-inch painted iron “Wilson” dial signed Warranted by Aaron Willard, pierced fret top, brass fluted columns flanking the glazed hood and rectangular waist doors, the waist and base with fan and line inlays, all on a two-stage base molding and ogee feet, eight-day time and hour strike movement powered by two iron weights and regulated by a brass faced pendulum bob and iron rod, ht. 98 1/2 in.

Condition

Condition: No significant repairs or replacements, original fret, plinths, finials and ogee feet, blocking on base essentially intact, two replacement glue blocks, iron weights and pendulum are both period components, dial blacking relined.

with brass stop fluted columns, ogee bracket feet, fret work and three brass finials; the painted iron dial signed Aaron Willard with revolving moon phase decoration; weight driven eight day movement; interior bearing paper with family history of a prominent Nantucket family; height: 93 inches

Provenance: Mrs. Jonathan Barney, (nee Judith Barnard), Nantucket, Massachusetts; Mrs. Labin Swain, (nee Abigail Barney), Nantucket, Massachusetts; Mrs. Prince Ewer, (nee Eliza Swain), Nantucket, Massachusetts; Mrs. Albert Ewer; by descent to current owner.

Other Notes: The interior of the case bears a letter that begins with Anna Coffin Starbuck (Nantucket 1716-1785) who married Peter Barnard. The couple had Judith Barnard (Nantucket, 1745-1818), the purported first owner of the clock. The clock has descended within the family.
This clock has descended within the same family as Lots 32 and 33.

right front foot is missing side ogee piece; minor repairs to original fretwork; escutcheon missing on bonnet door; veneer loss and patches to bonnet door; glass and door are loose and need attention; tight split to lower case panels; small repairs and loss to top of waist door; pendulum, weights and key present; movement appears original and complete; dial paint appears original with over paint to calendar numbers; some paint loss to moon phase

Aaron Willard Federal mahogany tall-case clock, 19th century. Roxbury style case on ogee feet with brass fluted columns. Fretwork top, painted moon-phase dial, signed “Aaron Willard”. Descended in the family of Rev. Lancelot Byrd Minor. 8’2″ tall. 14-1/2″ waist.
