Monumental American Jeweller’s Regulator Clock

- Sold Price:
- Sold Date:
A very attractive American jewellers regulator, dating to the 1880’s using a French pinwheel movement.  It was very typical of American clock manufacturers to import and outfit their cases with these French movements.  The case is of very high quality featuring burled walnut accents, glass sides, mirrored back and heavily carved decoration.Â
Usually, you will find this style of jewellers regulator using a “Gridiron” or “Lyre” style pendulum, this clock uses a very attractive deluxe 3-Jar mercury pendulum.  Originally, the glass jars would have contained actual mercury – it has been removed and replaced with polished steel cylinders of equal weight for obvious reasons. Â
CONDITION:Â
The clock runs strong and keeps excellent time.  The dial is free of hairlines, chips, touch-ups or restoration.  The door shuts flush and latches properly.  The two upper finials and bottom finial appear to have been added at a later date and could be removed if desired. Â
All parts including the movement, mounting brackets, dial, brass dial surround, pendulum, weight and hands appear correct and original to the case. Â This clock has not been monkeyed with, as so many clocks from this era have been. Â
The case is free of missing or replaced veneer, splits, cracked glass, and damage. Â There are a few light scratches, dents to the lower inside of the case – nothing noticeable or visually distracting. Â
Measures : 72 inches tall – 29 inches wide – 10 inches deep. Leonard Johnson Collection.
