Description

A Rare early 19th century Joseph Ives “Looking Glass” clock, ca.1818. 8 day weight driven time and strike movement with steel plates and Brass gears, roller pinions and a short drop pendulum and painted metal dial. Mahogany case with a scroll work crown, Bird’s-eye Maple detail and original Brass urn finials, single long door with Eglomise dial surround, mirrored center section and Eglomise lower panel, flanked by finely reeded flat columns with turned Bulls-eye tops and bases. Restored by Herschel Burt, in good running order. Refinished case, with slight wear, older restored dial paint and Eglomise panels. ex collection Dr. Joseph Fern, Pittsburgh. 52″ high. Description

A 56″ mahogany, mirror and reverse painted cased wall clock by Ives. This with an iron painted dial above a mirror measuring 23 1/2″ X 13 1/2″ all above a reverse painted pendulum lentical. The case with reeded columns supporting a sleight molded frieze and a scroll crested top with brass finials.

“Looking glass” clock by Joseph Ives

Description

An important reverse painted and mirror and wood cased wall clock by Joseph Ives, (American 1782-1862). Invented and Patented the Mirror clock probably in the 1830s, and also invented the roller pinions used in clocks.

Joseph Ives Mahogany Looking Glass Wall Clock, Bristol, Connecticut, c. 1820, scroll top with brass finials, painted iron dial with Roman numerals, full-length door with reeded columns flanking the looking glass, reverse-painted glasses surrounding the dial and along the base, blue painted interior, eight-day time and iron plate movement with rack strike and roller pinions, two cast iron weights and long pendulum, ht. 56 1/4 in.
