Original 3 in. paper dial marked “Paris”, has black Roman hour numerals, hinged door bezel, brass 30 hour spring driven time only movement with lever escapement, attr: Waterbury Clock Co.; has an escape lever which animates the eyes. Cast iron figure of a woman titled “Topsey”, wears a puffy dress and holds a tambourine in front of her which acts as the dial bezel; case in in original paint and nice coverall condition, unsigned, attr: Bradley & Hubbard. 17 in. high x 9.25 in. wide x 6.25 in. deep. Cast iron figure of a woman titled “Topsey”, wears a puffy dress and holds a tambourine in front of her which is the dial bezel; case is repainted, replaced screws, unsigned, attr: Bradley & Hubbard. Movement is dirty but running. 17 in. high x 9.25 in. wide x 6.25 in. deep. Weight: 11.5 lbs.

“Topsey” Blinking Eye Clock, attributed to Bradley

Description

“Topsey” Blinking Eye Clock, attributed to Bradley and Hubbard, Meriden, Connecticut, c. 1870, the cast iron case in the form of a black woman with green V-neck blouse, brown skirt with red trim and red shoes, thirty-hour lever escapement movement and paper on zinc dial with Roman numerals mounted just above the hemline, mechanical connection provides automaton motion to the eyes which move up and down with the escapement action, all on an oval base, ht. 16 1/2 in.

Condition

Condition: Paint is original, discoloration on the original paper dial, movement wants cleaning but runs well with good automaton action.
