The following treasure is from the living estate of Ailene & Buddy Ford; noted dealers and lifelong collectors of exceptional antique & vintage heirlooms. This lot presents the classic Blinking Eye clock , first seen in 1857. This one is titled Mammy , Kitchen Servent , clock w/ side to side eyes (functioning). Set upon a staged wood plinth. Clock probably needs adjustment. dating the clock which is a recreation from the 1970 time period. – ***** Weight: 6# – Measurements: 6 x 12 tall ***** BLINKING EYE CLOCKS ***** “Blinking Eye” novelty clock, patented in 1857 by inventor Pietro Cinquini. The clocks were made by Bradley and Hubbard of Meriden, Connecticut. They used 30-hour clock movements from Seth Thomas, Chauncey Jerome, or Waterbury. The eyes were activated by a wire attached to the balance wheel and verge of the movement. Some went up and down, others moved side to side. Several models were made, including “The Continental” (a soldier in a tricorn hat), Sambo, Topsy, and Santa. They were recreated in the 1970’s and early 1980’s by Waterbury and several other companies.

scattered minor wear to surfaces. Revised Condition Report 11/12:green paint on pants and orange on vest appears to be old repaint, remainder of paint appears to be original. Clock runs, eyes move up and down, missing screw on neck of banjo.

Description

Continental Model Blinking Eye Clock: with a brass marine spring driven 30 hour movement. The cast iron case is marked “Bradley & Hubbard Patented July 14, 1857”. Marketed by several clock companies. The movement is made by E.N. Welch.

(Not running. the case has been repainted. It winds ok, but it is not ticking.)
