The case features famous inventor Denis Papin, the gilt metal seated figure has his blueprints on his knee and his left hand rests on his pioneering invention the steam digester; on a black enamel cast iron base with relief molded border, the clock tower has a bulbous finial with floral motif and side tassels. 4.5 in. Porcelain dial with Roman numerals on the chapter ring and exposed Brocot escapement; brass spring driven movement signed Ansonia, strikes on a coiled gong. Chapter ring has a few hairlines and some loss at 6 o’clock. 16.5 in. high x 19 wide x 7in. deep

Description

Ansonia Figural Mantle Cock – Denis Papin. Case has a black enamel & iron base with clock tower and seated figure of Denis Papin, the inventor of the “steam digester”. Has an inset porcelain dial signed “Ansonia Clock Co., Patented”, Roman hour numerals, fancy gilt pierced hands and exposed Brocot escapement with steel pallets; brass 8 day spring driven movement is signed “Ansonia Clock Co., New York, U.S.A.”, has fancy filigree engraved plates and an half hour strike on a coiled gong. Finish is worn off on the cast metal, dial has hairlines, missing minute hand. 16.5 in. high x 21 in. wide x 8 in. deep.

Pair of mantel clocks. 1st item: Ansonia Denis Papin bronze and black painted metal figural mantle clock. Clockworks marked “Ansonia Clock Co, Patented June 14, 81, New York, USA” and “Patented June 18, 1882”. Retains key and mechanism. 15 3/4″ H x 18 1/4″ W x 6 1/2″ D, 29.30 lbs. Late 19th century. 2nd item: Ansonia Royal Bonn La Fontaine porcelain clock with painted landscape decoration. Red seal en verso reads “Royal Bonn, FM, 1755”. Clockworks marked “Ansonia Clock Co, New York, USA”. Retains the original key. 10 1/2″ H x 8 3/8″ W x 5″ D, 6.9 lbs. Mid 18th century.

Condition

1st item: Oxidation to bronze, overall general wear and losses, mostly to black painted base. 2nd item: Overall cracquelure to body with overall general wear. Both clocks not tested for functionality.
